F'Sho-Announcement, We lost one of our greatest. Please check this out.
February 11, 2006 02:46 AM PST
Let me start by saying, I didn't know JD personally, but like many of you, I felt I did. I remember him selling the first SV tapes/CD's down at CafeMahogany. I remember an energetic SV crew taking the stage w/ Common @ the State Theatre to do "Thelonious". I loved the warm and personal (uniquely Detroit) style of Slum Village. Why I broke my neck to get down to Hart Plaza to see him perform w/ Madlib/Quas. You felt u knew him, his music did that to you. You went to Studio A just to get a feel of where it all took place. The cat was a genius. Dilla captured the aural Detroit. The grit, aggression, and glamour of the city, (warts and all). He created the illest "tracks" Det. MC's ever spit over. (He made us sound good). I loved his flow on his tracks. People have compared him to Dre. I go steps further, he was our generations Stevie Wonder/Curtis Mayfield. Full of Soul. When you learn a little about the breadth of his discography, you realize he was "neo-Soul". Might as well have called it "neo-Dilla". When u look at his influence, you realize he was a legend in his own time. A True Master. James Yancey's life was all too brief, but James Yancey's legacy will live on forever. Our prayers are with his family. We love you, Dilla, Rest in Peace. Let's continue to appreciate this genius who walked among us. Peace,
